Convention Details:
As the convention chairman, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) will act as the master of ceremonies for the four-day event. Both Johnson and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) are expected to speak at the convention.
On Sunday morning, both leaders appeared on national television to urge a reduction in divisive political rhetoric. Johnson told NBC’s «Today» show that Congress would thoroughly investigate the shooting to identify any security lapses and other necessary details for the American public. He emphasized the need for leaders from all political backgrounds to denounce the incident to lower the country’s political temperature.
Scalise, who was a victim of political violence in 2017, recalled how Trump visited him in the hospital after the attack. His main message now is to make political rhetoric less personal and more issue-focused.
Scalise told Fox News: «Everyone needs to be mindful of the rhetoric, but there is one side that attacks Donald Trump to demonize him personally. When we talk about the policies of Democrats and progressives, those policies should be the focus, but the left seems to target Donald Trump as a person.»
Delegate Reactions:
The excitement and optimism of the convention delegates, many of whom arrived before the shooting, have been somewhat dampened by discussions about prayers, investigations, calls for greater civility, and increased security measures, said State Treasurer John Fleming, one of Louisiana’s 47 delegates.
Roger Villere, one of Louisiana’s two representatives on the Republican National Committee, agreed and described the delegates’ mood as «serious but hopeful.» The Louisiana delegation was briefed on Sunday morning and informed that the convention would proceed as scheduled.
Security Measures: Security measures at the convention have been heightened. Fences and checkpoints have been set up several blocks from the venue, with additional screenings closer to the stadium. The security perimeter is expected to expand, and more security personnel have been brought in.
President Joe Biden stated on Sunday that Trump, as a former president and likely candidate, was under Secret Service protection. He also announced an official investigation to review security planning for presidential candidates and how those procedures were implemented during the Saturday incident.
Investigation and Future Plans:
Republican-majority House committees have announced hearings to investigate the incident. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), a panel member, stated: «We will thoroughly investigate the facts that occurred at President Trump’s rally. America deserves the whole truth.»
Other House committees, such as Intelligence and Homeland Security, have requested records from federal law enforcement agencies.
The nomination process is expected to conclude on Thursday night, but delegates will still witness some drama, such as the approval of a platform without a national abortion ban and significant revelations like Trump’s vice-presidential pick. State Senator Rick Edmonds (R-LA),
attending his first nomination convention as a delegate, favors Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) for VP, citing his conservative credentials and legislative skills. Baton Rouge delegate Debbie Kuehne supports Senator JD Vance (R-OH). North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is also reportedly among the finalists.
