As Elon Musk gears up to host a live interview with former President Donald Trump on his platform X, he’s taking extra precautions to ensure the event doesn’t face the same technical issues that marred Ron DeSantis’s campaign launch last year. Musk has announced that he’s conducting multiple «system scaling tests» to prepare for the high-profile broadcast.
Elon Musk, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), is pulling out all the stops to prevent any mishaps during his upcoming live interview with Donald Trump. Last year, Musk’s platform faced widespread ridicule after hosting the launch of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign, which was plagued by technical difficulties. The event was widely mocked, including by Trump’s campaign, which called it a «complete failure.»
Determined not to repeat the past, Musk is taking extensive measures to ensure a smooth experience for viewers this time around. On Sunday night, Musk posted on X, stating, «I’m going to conduct some system scaling tests tonight and tomorrow before the conversation with Donald Trump.»
In an effort to stress-test the platform, Musk streamed his gaming sessions live on X, twice. The first stream, lasting about 19 minutes, garnered 2.1 million views, while the second, lasting 46 minutes, attracted 1.3 million views by the time of publication. These tests are crucial for Musk, especially given the platform’s shaky performance during DeSantis’s campaign launch in May 2023.
DeSantis chose to launch his presidential campaign on X instead of traditional cable television. However, the highly anticipated event got off to a rocky start with multiple technical issues. The failed livestream became a target of mockery, with many pointing fingers at Musk’s platform. Trump’s campaign, in particular, didn’t miss the opportunity to criticize the launch, with a spokesperson calling it «a total failure.»
Despite the fiasco, Trump hasn’t been deterred from appearing on X for a live interview. However, while he’s willing to engage with Musk on X, Trump remains loyal to his own social media platform, Truth Social. The former president shifted to Truth Social after being banned from Twitter following the January 6th Capitol riots.
Although Musk reinstated Trump’s X account in November 2022, Trump has only posted once since—sharing his mugshot and a link to his campaign website in August 2023. It’s worth noting that Musk’s vocal support for Trump may have played a role in luring the former president back to X. Trump has praised Musk and his companies since receiving Musk’s endorsement.
On August 3rd, during a rally in Georgia, Trump acknowledged Musk’s influence, stating that he had changed his stance on electric vehicles because of Musk’s support. «I’m in favor of electric cars. I have to be because, as you know, Elon gave me a great endorsement. So, I have no choice,» Trump told the crowd, adding that people should still have access to gasoline-powered vehicles.
Representatives for Musk and Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
